A woman in her mid-20s was shot on Friday evening at a sports facility in Älvsjö, a district in southern Stockholm, according to Aftonbladet. The shooting happened at around 9 p.m., and the woman is now receiving hospital treatment for what police describe as very serious injuries.
As of midnight, no suspect had been taken into custody, Aftonbladet reports. Police have said there is no indication of danger to the general public.
"Not based on what we know about the incident," police press spokesperson Daniel Wikdahl told Aftonbladet.
Police have opened a preliminary investigation into attempted murder and remained at the scene overnight to carry out a forensic examination.
Why it matters
The shooting took place at a venue attached to a school in Älvsjö, an area that on a Friday night was hosting organized sports. According to Aftonbladet, a football match and a floorball match were being played at the facility at the time.
Police have stated that the gunfire did not occur in the same room as the matches. People who were inside the building were escorted out at around 10 p.m.
The fact that a shooting happened at a location in active use by the public, even if not in the same space as the games, is likely to sharpen questions about safety at community sports venues in the Stockholm area. It also comes as police continue to search for whoever fired the shots, with no arrest reported in the hours after the incident.
Train services halted at nearby station
The police response extended beyond the sports facility itself. After the shooting, officers ordered that no trains be allowed to stop at the nearby Älvsjö station, according to Aftonbladet. That order was lifted at 10:40 p.m., roughly an hour and a half after the incident was first reported.
Älvsjö station is a busy commuter hub on Stockholm's rail network, and a stop order there would have affected evening travelers on multiple lines. The measure appears to have been temporary and tied to the initial police operation around the scene.
What police have said — and what remains unclear
The information made public so far is limited. Police have confirmed the victim's age range and the severity of her injuries, the location and approximate timing of the shooting, and the fact that the case is being handled as an attempted murder. They have not named a suspect, described a possible motive, or said whether they believe the shooter and the victim knew each other.
Wikdahl's comment to Aftonbladet addressed only the question of public safety, and police have not offered further detail on why they reached that assessment. The statement that the shooting did not take place in the same room as the football and floorball matches is also the extent of what has been said about how the incident unfolded inside the building.
The forensic work at the scene was still underway as of the last update, and police have not announced any arrests in connection with the case.
What to watch
Investigators are continuing their technical examination of the scene, and the key developments to watch are whether police announce an arrest or name a suspect, and whether they release further details about the circumstances of the shooting. Anyone with information has not been publicly directed to a specific channel beyond standard police reporting lines.
